In order to put a tourniquet on you want to make sure you communicate with the patient so they know what to expect as you put on the tourniquet. The medical professional will apply the tourniquet. Generally, when drawing blood the band will go behind the arm and pull for flexibility. The phlebotomist will bring the band in front of the arm. It typically ties like a shoestring, where you cross the band and with the dominant hand loop it and tie once.

A medical professional has a better visual and therefore may use winged-infusion (butterfly) needles to obtain a sampling of blood. Having the proper supplies is essential.
